Lafayette Gun Club Upsets Union Pines NJROTC

Lafayette Gun Club upset Union Pines NJROTC 999 to 980 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Lafayette Gun Club was able to win despite averaging 16 points lower than Union Pines NJROTC coming into this game.

Their second win in a row. Lafayette Gun Club finishes the season in fourteenth place overall and third place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. Lafayette Gun Club was led by, Maria Koenig who shot a 261. The remaining contributing members were Matthew Stout, Victoria Koenig, and Makenzieanne Wygans. Lafayette Gun Club is from Grafton, VA, and is coached by Karlowe Kroon.

Union Pines NJROTC finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the season in twenty-first place overall and seventh place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Union Pines NJROTC was led by, Cristina Gonzales who shot a 249. The remaining contributing members were Shaun Garza, Shelby Motta, and Nathan Auman. Union Pines NJROTC is from Whispering Pines, NC, and is coached by Keith Dangerfield.

These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
