Smith Station MCJROTC defeats New Caney AJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Smith Station MCJROTC defeated New Caney AJROTC 1034 to 974 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Smith Station MCJROTC finishes the season in eighth place overall and second place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. Smith Station MCJROTC was led by, Hannah Williams who shot a 267. The remaining contributing members were Chase Peterson, Robert Alexander, and Brooke Jarrett. Smith Station MCJROTC is from Smith Station, AL, and is coached by Major William Bolden.

New Caney AJROTC finished the season with a 2 - 5 record. They finishes the season in ninth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. New Caney AJROTC was led by, Tristen Ivy who shot a 253. The remaining contributing members were Wilber Morales-Lumbreras(required), Kade Rawlins, and Abigail Jaimes-Alvarado. New Caney AJROTC is from New Caney, TX, and is coached by MSG(R) Joseph R. Smith Station MCJROTC will advance to the Marine Corps JROTC Conference Title Game. They will take on Lejeune MCJROTC for that title. This game is scheduled to begin December 2nd.

These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
