Cross Creek NJROTC Narrowly Defeats C. T. Johnson AJROTC
Cross Creek NJROTC edged out C. T. Johnson AJROTC 1046 to 1037 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Cross Creek NJROTC finishes the regular season in seventh place overall and third place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 4 - 3 record. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by, Patrick Johnson who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were Melvin Pell, Jasmine Kelso, and Kirsten Sullivan. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by CDR Johnathan Shaw.
C. T. Johnson AJROTC finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the regular season in fifteenth place overall and sixth place within their 'Army Jrotc' conference. C. T. Johnson AJROTC was led by, Paul Mankewitz who shot a 276. The remaining contributing members were Ian Zinsmeister, Alyssa Castillo, and Joseph Coursey. C. T. Johnson AJROTC is from San Antonio, TX, and is coached by MAJ Tom Groggett.
Both teams will advance to the postseason. Cross Creek NRJTOC will compete in the Championship Tournament where they are the number 7 seed. Their first round is against Saint Thomas Academy. C. T. Johnson AJROTC will compete in the Invitational Tournament where they are the number six seed. Their first round opponent is North Brunswick AJROTC. The postseason begins December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
