American Legion Post 41 defeats Rockcastle County AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season American Legion Post 41 defeated Rockcastle County AJROTC 1392.2 to 1363.8 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. With the win, American Legion Post 41 is in ninth place overall and third place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They currently have a 4 - 2 record. American Legion Post 41 was led by, Everett Smith who shot a 378.1. The remaining contributing members were Blake Kitzmiller, Gavin Tharp, and Austin Grimmet. American Legion Post 41 is from Elk Garden, WV, and is coached by Rod Ryan.
Rockcastle County AJROTC currently has a 1 - 4 record. After the loss they are in eleventh place overall and eighth place within their 'Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Rockcastle County AJROTC was led by, Damien Johnson who shot a 361.1. The remaining contributing members were Richie Clouse, Sarah Pride, and Daniel Ashcraft. Rockcastle County AJROTC is from Mount Vernon, KY, and is coached by Darren Sundys.
Next up American Legion Post 41 will compete against Fort Bend County 4-H from Fulshear, TX. Fort Bend County 4-H currently has a 2 - 3 record. While Rockcastle County AJROTC has a bye week.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single game conference title game for the top two teams in the JROTC and Junior Rifle Club divisions.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
