Versailles American Legion Narrowly Defeats Pearl River NJROTC
Versailles American Legion edged out Pearl River NJROTC 990 to 983 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Versailles American Legion finishes the season in twentieth place overall and second place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 3 - 3 record. Versailles American Legion was led by, Trenton Franklin who shot a 254. The remaining contributing members were Joseph Cairns, Courtney Grable, and Richard Block. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.
Pearl River NJROTC finished the season with a 4 - 1 record. They finishes the season in twenty-fourth place overall and fourth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season Pearl River NJROTC was led by, JaMyron Dorsey who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Emma Lee, Summer Brown, and Anna Lee. Pearl River NJROTC is from Pearl River, LA, and is coached by Timothy Lane.
Next up Versailles American Legion will compete against Pickaway Diabolos from Circleville, OH. Pickaway Diabolos currently has a 4 - 2 record. While Pearl River NJROTC will compete against Joliet Central AJROTC from Joliet, IL. Joliet Central AJROTC currently has a 4 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
