Zion Benton Township defeats Aiken NJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Zion Benton Township defeated Aiken NJROTC 1109 to 1038 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their sixth win in a row, Zion Benton Township is in first place in their Division with a 6 - 0 record. Zion Benton Township was led by COLE RICE who shot a 282. The remaining contributing members were BAILEY HOENIG, REGINA RAQUINO, and ELENA APARICIO. Zion Benton Township is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.

Snapping a two game win streak Aiken NJROTC dropped to 3 - 3 on the season. They are currently in fifth place in their Division. Aiken NJROTC was led by Isabelle Blystone who shot a 274. The remaining contributing members were Dalton Dunson, Haydon Larson, and Carly Burgess. Aiken NJROTC is from Aiken, SC, and is coached by LT Timothy Marinelli.

Next up Zion Benton Township will compete against Ramona NJROTC from Ramona, CA. Ramona NJROTC currently has a 6 - 0 record. This game will determine the NJROTC Champions Division winner, and earn the automatic bid to the post-season Championship Tournament.

Aiken NJROTC will compete against McDowell NJROTC from Marion, NC. McDowell NJROTC currently has a 2 - 4 record.

These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
