Zion Benton Township Narrowly Defeats Ramona NJROTC
Zion Benton Township edged out Ramona NJROTC 1105 to 1103 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Zion Benton Township finishes the season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Zion Benton Township was led by JEREMY ANGEL who shot a 280. The remaining contributing members were COLE RICE, REGINA RAQUINO, and DIANA ROMAN. Zion Benton Township is from Zion, IL, and is coached by Dan Hackstein.
Snapping a six game win streak Ramona NJROTC dropped to 6 - 1 on the season. They finish the season in second place in their Division. Ramona NJROTC was led by Paige Hugelmaier who shot a 279. The remaining contributing members were Nicole Lewis, Marisa Houry, and Joseph Schultz. Ramona NJROTC is from Ramona, CA, and is coached by CPO Bob Richardson.
Both Zion Benton and Ramona will go on to represent Navy JROTC in the post-season Championship Tournament. Zion Benton is the number one seed for the second year in a row, and will compete against eight seed Saint Thomas Academy in the opening round game. Ramona is the number five seed and will compete against four seed Ozark AJROTC. The post-season will begin the week after Thanksgiving.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
