Selma MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Fontana MCJROTC
Selma MCJROTC edged out Fontana MCJROTC 1044 to 1035 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Selma MCJROTC finishes the season in fourth place in their Division with a 4 - 3 record. Selma MCJROTC was led by Mark Medina who shot a 271. The remaining contributing members were Evelyn Santos, Gabriela Sanchez Rios, and Matthew Alvarenga. Selma MCJROTC is from Selma, CA, and is coached by Mike Romero.
By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, Selma MCJROTC will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.
Fontana MCJROTC dropped to 3 - 4 on the season. They finish the season in fifth place in their Division. Fontana MCJROTC was led by Sebastian Rodriguez who shot a 265. The remaining contributing members were Ranndy Soto, Isabel Hernandez, and Rodrigo Ortez. Fontana MCJROTC is from Fontana, CA, and is coached by MSgt Wayne Harkley.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
