La Cueva MCJROTC defeats Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club
La Cueva MCJROTC defeated Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club 1608.4 to 1562.3 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row. La Cueva MCJROTC finishes the season in third place overall and second place within their 'Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 1 record. La Cueva MCJROTC was led by, Andrew Schmidt who shot a 407.0. The remaining contributing members were Anelisa Fernandez, Molly Palko, and Isaac Reichsfeld. La Cueva MCJROTC is from Albuquerque, NM, and is coached by 1st Sgt Alberto Griego.
Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club finished the season with a 3 - 4 record. They finishes the season in ninth place overall and fourth place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club was led by, Allison Klavuhn who shot a 405.2. The remaining contributing members were Jesse Chamberlain, Travis Kendall, and Joey Kovach. Everett Sportsman Junior Rifle Club is from Everett, PA, and is coached by George Kuhne.
La Cueva MCJROTC will advance to the postseason championship tournament where they are seeded third. Their first round opponent is Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC. The first round of the postseason starts December 2nd.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
