Granbury MCJROTC Wins Their First National Air Rifle League Title
Granbury MCJROTC edged out Georgia Competitive Shooters last week and wins their first National Air Rifle League title. The final score was 2346 to 2338.
Granbury MCJROTC has been close to winning the title in past seasons. In 2015 they were the runner up, being edged out by none other than Georgia Competitive Shooters. In 2016 they were the fifth seed in the tournament and lost in the quarter finals. In 2017 there were the third seed, lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winner, Georgia Competitive Shooters. Finally this season, as the number one seed, they won their title.
Granbury MCJROTC earned their number one seed going into the tournament with a perfect 7 - 0 record during the regular season. They had wins over Arlington Fairfax IWLA, Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC and Rio Salado Sportsman's Club. With their regular season performance they also won the JROTC Conference title.
Most Valuable Player honors goes to Allison Henry of Granbury MCJROTC. She lead Granbury in both the quarter-final and semi-final games versus Peidra Vista AJROTC and Rio Salado Sportsman's Club respectively. She was third on the team in the championship game.
In the title game Granbury MCJROTC was led by, Makenize Sheffield who shot a 592. The remaining contributing members were Philip Becker, Allison Henry, Clarissa Layland, and Elizabeth Plecity. Granbury MCJROTC is from Granbury, TX, and is coached by LtCol Scott Casey.
Georgia Competitive Shooters finished the season with a 8 - 2 record. They earned the Junior Rifle Club Conference title during the regular season. Georgia Competitive Shooters has three National League titles in their name, winning the league in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
In the title game Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by, Addy Burrow who shot a 589. The remaining contributing members were Molly McGhin, Anusha Pakkam, Savanna Stalnaker, and Gabby Morrow. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.
The National Air Rifle League is sponsored by the Orion Scoring System and is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts, an eight week regular season, followed by the Championship Tournament. The Championship Tournament takes the top eight teams after the regular season where the teams compete in a single-elimination style bracket.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
