Sickles AFJROTC Narrowly Defeats O'Connor AFJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Sickles AFJROTC edged out O'Connor AFJROTC 1069 to 1063 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row. Sickles AFJROTC finishes the season in thirteenth place overall and second place within their 'Air Force Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. Sickles AFJROTC was led by, Isabella Idell who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Nordiz Fuenttes, Gwen Ellis, and Dylan Swartz. Sickles AFJROTC is from Tampa, FL, and is coached by MSG William Robinson.
O'Connor AFJROTC finished the season with a 2 - 5 record. They finishes the season in twentieth place overall and third place within their 'Air Force Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season O'Connor AFJROTC was led by, Simon Kreth who shot a 269. The remaining contributing members were Elisabeth Lopez, Tyler Cameron, and Camryn Stone. O'Connor AFJROTC is from Helotes, TX, and is coached by Bea Fleureau and David Delarue.
Sickles AFJROTC will advance to the postseason's Invitational Tournament as the number five seed. In their quarterfinal matchup they will take on South Effingham NJROTC who has a 4 - 3 record. The postseason begins 26 November 2018.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
