Cross Creek NJROTC Narrowly Defeats South Effingham NJROTC
Cross Creek NJROTC edged out South Effingham NJROTC 1076 to 1063 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. Cross Creek NJROTC finishes the regular season in ninth place overall and second place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 5 - 2 record. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by, Marvin Pell who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Melvin Pell, Patrick Johnson, and JinYee Ortiz. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.
South Effingham NJROTC finished the regular season with a 4 - 3 record. They finishes the season in twelfth place overall and third place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. Shooting their highest team score of the season South Effingham NJROTC was led by, William Blakeney who shot a 275. The remaining contributing members were Jayce Mock, Gabrielle Call, and Matthew Diaz. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Both Cross Creek NJROTC and South Effingham NJROTC will advance to the postseason's Invitational Tournament. They are respectively the number one and four seeds. Cross Creek NJROTC will take on Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC (4 - 3) in their quarterfinal matchup. South Effingham NJROTC will take on Sickles AFJROTC (5 - 2). The postseason begins 26 November 2018.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
