North Gwinnett High School defeats Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club
North Gwinnett High School defeated Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club 1480 to 1450 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. North Gwinnett High School finishes the season in first place overall and first place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. They finished the season with a 6 - 0 record. North Gwinnett High School was led by, Matt Herrington who shot a 383. The remaining contributing members were Caitlyn Miller, Shasta Robinson, and Corina Fluker. North Gwinnett High School is from Sugar Hill, GA, and is coached by Robert Herrington.
Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club finished the season with a 3 - 3 record. They finishes the season in fifth place overall and second place within their 'Junior Rifle Club' conference. Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club was led by, Emma MacKenzie who shot a 374. The remaining contributing members were Kayla Reifel, Lindsey Foshee, and Madeline Biddinger. Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club is from Eagle River, AK, and is coached by Samantha Taylor.
Next up North Gwinnett High School will compete against Abraham Lincoln AJROTC from Denver, CO. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC currently has a 5 - 1 record. While Alaska Eagle Eye Shooting Club will compete against Henderson County AJROTC from Henderson, KY. Henderson County AJROTC currently has a 0 - 6 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single game conference title game for the top two teams in the JROTC and Junior Rifle Club divisions.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
