Piedra Vista AJROTC Narrowly Defeats LaFayette AJROTC
Piedra Vista AJROTC edged out LaFayette AJROTC 1459 to 1442 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. With the win, Piedra Vista AJROTC is in ninth place overall and third place within their 'Jrotc' conference. They currently have a 5 - 1 record. Piedra Vista AJROTC was led by, Amoret McCartney who shot a 384. The remaining contributing members were Shaylee Charley, Malea Scott, and Jordan Harris. Piedra Vista AJROTC is from Farmington, NM, and is coached by David Naber.
LaFayette AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record. After the loss they are in eleventh place overall and fourth place within their 'Jrotc' conference. LaFayette AJROTC was led by, Alyssa Kiser who shot a 369. The remaining contributing members were Troy Mussared, Christopher Franklin, and Alaina Shults. LaFayette AJROTC is from LaFayette, GA, and is coached by Perry Fouts.
Next up Piedra Vista AJROTC will compete against Northside High School from Columbus, GA. Northside High School currently has a 3 - 3 record. While LaFayette AJROTC will compete against Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC from Fountain, CO. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
