Georgia Competitive Shooters defeats Lake Region Shooting Sports

Georgia Competitive Shooters defeated Lake Region Shooting Sports 1557 to 1484 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Georgia Competitive Shooters finishes the season in second place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by Molly McGhin who shot a 394. The remaining contributing members were Addy Burrow, Eddy Jared, and Sawyer Williams. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.

Lake Region Shooting Sports dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in fourth place in their Division. Lake Region Shooting Sports was led by Brandon Alexander who shot a 375. The remaining contributing members were Jacob Vaagen, Maria Rosa-Nieves, and Hannah Vaagen. Lake Region Shooting Sports is from Devils Lake, ND, and is coached by Rick Jorgensen.

Both Georgia Competitive Shooters and Lake Region Shooting Sports advance to the post-season's Championship Tournament. Georgia Competitive Shooters earn the number two seed and will take on Carrollton High School in their opening game. Lake Region Shooting Sports earn the number six seed and will take on Granbury MCJROTC. The post-season starts the week after Thanksgiving.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the conference. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
