Gulfport MCJROTC defeats R-S Central MCJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Gulfport MCJROTC defeated R-S Central MCJROTC 1091 to 1062 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Gulfport MCJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Mackayla Bourgeois who shot a 278. The remaining contributing members were Dimitri Celentano, Taylor Gautier, and Halie Ladner. Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.
Snapping a two game win streak R-S Central MCJROTC dropped to 2 - 1 on the season. They are currently in second place in their Division. R-S Central MCJROTC was led by Christina Murphy who shot a 270. The remaining contributing members were Destiny Cureton, Cheyenne Downey, and Samantha Phipps. R-S Central MCJROTC is from Rutherfordton, NC, and is coached by Maj CJ Brown.
Next up Gulfport MCJROTC will compete against La Cueva MCJROTC from Albuquerque, NM. La Cueva MCJROTC currently has a 0 - 2 record. R-S Central MCJROTC will compete against Warren Central MCJROTC from Indianapolis, IN. Warren Central MCJROTC currently has a 1 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
