Versailles American Legion defeats Bears Ears Sportsman Club
Versailles American Legion defeated Bears Ears Sportsman Club 918 to 770 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Versailles American Legion is in third place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. Versailles American Legion was led by Richard Block who shot a 246. The remaining contributing members were Jamie Thomas, Kaitlyn Schwanholt, and Courtney Grable. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.
Bears Ears Sportsman Club dropped to 2 - 2 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Bears Ears Sportsman Club was led by Spencer Ashley who shot a 232. The remaining contributing members were Chase Delamater, Forrest Siminoe, and Zack Durham. Bears Ears Sportsman Club is from Craig, CO, and is coached by Amanda Ott.
Next up Versailles American Legion will compete against Southern Indiana Sharpshooters from Jasper, IN. Southern Indiana Sharpshooters currently has a 1 - 2 record. Bears Ears Sportsman Club will compete against Kealakehe Rifle Team from Kailua-Kona, HI. Kealakehe Rifle Team currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
