Topeka West AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Hirschi AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Topeka West AJROTC edged out Hirschi AJROTC 854 to 846 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, Topeka West AJROTC is in fifth place in their Division with a 1 - 3 record. Topeka West AJROTC was led by Bryon Meredith who shot a 246. The remaining contributing members were Caitlyn Henson, Mario Alvarado, and Bryce Driskell. Topeka West AJROTC is from Topeka, KS, and is coached by Jame E Hall.
Hirschi AJROTC dropped to 0 - 4 on the season. They are currently in seventh place in their Division. Hirschi AJROTC was led by Harper Wood who shot a 253. The remaining contributing members were Nolan Gallaher, Kevin Pagan, and Ethan Sanders. Hirschi AJROTC is from Wichita Falls, TX, and is coached by 1SG James Faurie.
Next up Topeka West AJROTC will compete against Alvin C. York AJROTC from Jamestown, TN. Alvin C. York AJROTC currently has a 1 - 3 record. Hirschi AJROTC will compete against Grainger AJROTC from Rutledge, TN. Grainger AJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Masters Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
