Gulfport MCJROTC defeats Clover AFJROTC

Second seed Gulfport MCJROTC defeated seventh seed Clover AFJROTC 1101 to 1057 last week in the National Air Rifle League Sporter Tournament. This game featured the Air Force JROTC champion and the Marine Corps JROTC champion.

Gulfport MCJROTC won the Marine Corps JROTC Champions Division with a perfect 7 - 0 record. In fact, they are undefeated in league play for the past two years. This is their second post-season tournament and they are the defending Sporter League champions.

In their quarter final game Gulfport MCJROTC was led by Gabrielle Phelps who shot a 281. The remaining contributing members were Rebecca Cook, Taylor Saulters, Mackayla Bourgeois, and . Gulfport MCJROTC is from Gulfport, MS, and is coached by LtCol John Owens.

Gulfport MCJROTC will take on sixth seed Lebanon AJROTC in their semi-final game.

This was the first year in the league for Clover AFJROTC. In the regular season they won the Air Force JROTC Champions Division with a 7 - 0 record.

In their quarter final game Clover AFJROTC was led by Kristopher Dauble who shot a 273. The remaining contributing members were Brianna Fish, Alex Rulevich, Joie Palmer, and . Clover AFJROTC is from Clover, SC, and is coached by SMSgt Clarence Woodham.

The post-season tournament is for the top eight teams in the National Air Rifle Sporter League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season that concluded in November. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, going on now, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
