St. John's College AJROTC defeats Ridge View AJROTC
St. John's College AJROTC defeated Ridge View AJROTC 1236 to 1057 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, St. John's College AJROTC is in fifth place in their Division with a 2 - 1 record. St. John's College AJROTC was led by Connor Lamble who shot a 351. The remaining contributing members were Julia Pennanen, Ryan Hunter, and Maria Shepp. St. John's College AJROTC is from Washington, DC, and is coached by SFC Scheddrick Womack.
Ridge View AJROTC dropped to 0 - 3 on the season. They are currently in eighth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Ridge View AJROTC was led by Jillian LeRoux who shot a 298. The remaining contributing members were Jared Banks, Jacob Newman, and Christopher Tinneny. Ridge View AJROTC is from Columbia, SC, and is coached by Gene England.
Next up St. John's College AJROTC will compete against Douglas County AJROTC from Douglasville, GA. Douglas County AJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record. Ridge View AJROTC will compete against Leavenworth AJROTC from Leavenworth, KS. Leavenworth AJROTC currently has a 3 - 0 record.
These two teams are competing in the JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
