McDowell NJROTC defeats Onate NJROTC
McDowell NJROTC defeated Onate NJROTC 980 to 870 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row, McDowell NJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 5 - 0 record. McDowell NJROTC was led by ZACHARY JAYNES who shot a 261. The remaining contributing members were SETH BURNETTE, ANDREW ROUSE, and AUSTIN JOHNSON. McDowell NJROTC is from Marion, NC, and is coached by Steven Ross.
Snapping a four game win streak Onate NJROTC dropped to 4 - 1 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Onate NJROTC was led by Izabell Homer who shot a 247. The remaining contributing members were Angel Day , Crystal Parra, and Raelynn Hansen. Onate NJROTC is from Las Cruces, NM, and is coached by Robert Rodriguez.
Next up McDowell NJROTC will compete against El Camino Real NJROTC from Woodland Hills, CA. El Camino Real NJROTC currently has a 3 - 2 record. Onate NJROTC will compete against Gallatin NJROTC from Gallatin, TN. Gallatin NJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
