McDowell NJROTC defeats Gallatin NJROTC
McDowell NJROTC defeated Gallatin NJROTC 987 to 951 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fourth win in a row, McDowell NJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 4 - 0 record. McDowell NJROTC was led by ZACHARY JAYNES who shot a 256. The remaining contributing members were SETH BURNETTE, AUSTIN JOHNSON, and AUSTIN SMITH. McDowell NJROTC is from Marion, NC, and is coached by Steven Ross.
Snapping a three game win streak Gallatin NJROTC dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Gallatin NJROTC was led by Tristen Stokes who shot a 260. The remaining contributing members were Ashton Fontana, Christian Blizzard, and Alex Lame. Gallatin NJROTC is from Gallatin, TN, and is coached by Duff Thompson.
Next up McDowell NJROTC will compete against Onate NJROTC from Las Cruces, NM. Onate NJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record. Gallatin NJROTC will compete against Liberty NJROTC from Renton, WA. Liberty NJROTC currently has a 0 - 4 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
