Bears Ears Sportsman Club defeats Ward County 4-H

Shooting their highest score of the season Bears Ears Sportsman Club defeated Ward County 4-H 700 to 678 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row, Bears Ears Sportsman Club is in third place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. Bears Ears Sportsman Club was led by Donovan Converse who shot a 219. The remaining contributing members were Eli Ellis, Forrest Siminoe, and Abigail Martinez. Bears Ears Sportsman Club is from Craig, CO, and is coached by Alvin Luker.

Ward County 4-H dropped to 1 - 3 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Ward County 4-H was led by Trinity Reyes who shot a 190. The remaining contributing members were Cameron Breeding, Connor Heflin, and Tyler Slaton. Ward County 4-H is from Monahans, TX, and is coached by Marc Fuentes.

Next up Bears Ears Sportsman Club will compete against Midland Young Guns from Midland, TX. Midland Young Guns currently has a 4 - 0 record. Ward County 4-H will compete against Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports from Emporia, KS. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports currently has a 3 - 1 record.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
