Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports defeats Ward County 4-H

Shooting their highest score of the season Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports defeated Ward County 4-H 943 to 657 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports is in first place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Karalyn Karjala who shot a 240. The remaining contributing members were Isaac Cushenbery, Garland Hanlin, and Kaitlyn Karjala. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports is from Emporia, KS, and is coached by Beverly Hilbish.

Ward County 4-H dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Ward County 4-H was led by Tyler Slaton who shot a 188. The remaining contributing members were Trinity Reyes, Cameron Breeding, and Draven Duncan. Ward County 4-H is from Monahans, TX, and is coached by Marc Fuentes.

Next up Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports will compete against Midland Young Guns from Midland, TX. Midland Young Guns currently has a 3 - 0 record. Ward County 4-H will compete against Bears Ears Sportsman Club from Craig, CO. Bears Ears Sportsman Club currently has a 2 - 1 record.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
