Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports defeats Bears Ears Sportsman Club
Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports defeated Bears Ears Sportsman Club 919 to 688 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports finishes the season in second place in their Division with a 6 - 1 record. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports was led by Karalyn Karjala who shot a 238. The remaining contributing members were Isaac Cushenbery, Kaitlyn Karjala, and Garland Hanlin. Lyon County 4-H Shooting Sports is from Emporia, KS, and is coached by Beverly Hilbish.
Bears Ears Sportsman Club dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the season in third place in their Division. Bears Ears Sportsman Club was led by Eli Ellis who shot a 219. The remaining contributing members were Forrest Siminoe, Donovan Converse, and Abigail Martinez. Bears Ears Sportsman Club is from Craig, CO, and is coached by Alvin Luker.
These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Elite Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
