Lake Houston 4-H defeats Versailles American Legion

Lake Houston 4-H defeated Versailles American Legion 922 to 850 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row, Lake Houston 4-H is in first place in their Division with a 3 - 0 record. Lake Houston 4-H was led by Ethan Day who shot a 243. The remaining contributing members were Matthew Wallace, Carissa Wallace, and Ainsley Day. Lake Houston 4-H is from Kingwood, TX, and is coached by Greg Day.

Versailles American Legion dropped to 1 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fifth place in their Division. Shooting their highest team score of the season Versailles American Legion was led by Jamie Thomas who shot a 218. The remaining contributing members were Nathan May, Kaitlyn Schwanholt, and Richard Block. Versailles American Legion is from Versailles, IN, and is coached by Steve Scoggins.

Next up Lake Houston 4-H will compete against Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club from Fort Mill, NC. Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club currently has a 0 - 4 record. Versailles American Legion will compete against Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League from Monrovia, MD. Wildlife Achievement Chapter Izaak Walton League currently has a 1 - 2 record.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
