South Effingham NJROTC Narrowly Defeats Cross Creek NJROTC
South Effingham NJROTC edged out Cross Creek NJROTC 1056 to 1037 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win, South Effingham NJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 5 - 1 record. South Effingham NJROTC was led by Lucas Payne who shot a 269. The remaining contributing members were Jace Mock, Ronny Pierson, and William Blakeney. South Effingham NJROTC is from Guyton, GA, and is coached by Terry Stautberg.
Cross Creek NJROTC dropped to 3 - 3 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Cross Creek NJROTC was led by Marvin Pell who shot a 266. The remaining contributing members were Nina Rhodes, Nicki Rowe, and Clayton Watson. Cross Creek NJROTC is from Augusta, GA, and is coached by Jonathan Shaw.
Next up South Effingham NJROTC will compete against Lubbock NJROTC from Lubbock, TX. Lubbock NJROTC currently has a 3 - 3 record. Cross Creek NJROTC will compete against Hawthorne NJROTC from Hawthorne, CA. Hawthorne NJROTC currently has a 1 - 5 record.
These two teams are competing in the Navy JROTC Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
