Humboldt Sharpshooters Upsets Lake Region Shooting Sports

Humboldt Sharpshooters upset Lake Region Shooting Sports 1022 to 1010 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Humboldt Sharpshooters was able to win despite averaging 9 points lower than Lake Region Shooting Sports coming into this game.

Humboldt Sharpshooters finishes the regular season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Humboldt Sharpshooters was led by Annastasia Galpin who shot a 260. The remaining contributing members were Eli Dissing, Henry Volk, and Callie Ivey. Humboldt Sharpshooters is from Hartford, SD, and is coached by Eric Dissing.

Humboldt Sharpshooters' season will continue next week in the Post-Season tournament. They received an automatic bid by winning the Champion's Division and will be seeded eighth. They will compete against one seed Zion Benton NJROTC in the opening game.

Snapping a two game win streak Lake Region Shooting Sports dropped to 5 - 2 on the season. They finish the season in third place in their Division. Lake Region Shooting Sports was led by Brandon Alexander who shot a 259. The remaining contributing members were Christopher Morstad, Maria Rosa-Nieves, and Jacob Vaagen. Lake Region Shooting Sports is from Devil's Lake, ND, and is coached by Rick Jorgensen.

By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, both Humboldt Sharpshooters and Lake Region Shooting Sports will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
