Georgia Competitive Shooters defeats Maspenock Rod and Gun Club

Georgia Competitive Shooters defeated Maspenock Rod and Gun Club 1546 to 1514 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Georgia Competitive Shooters finishes the regular season in first place in their Division with a 7 - 0 record. Georgia Competitive Shooters was led by Molly McGhin who shot a 390. The remaining contributing members were Leah Martin, Sam Payne, and Addy Burrow. Georgia Competitive Shooters is from Griffin, GA, and is coached by Lisa Kelley.

Snapping a two game win streak Maspenock Rod and Gun Club dropped to 4 - 3 on the season. They finish the regular season in third place in their Division. Maspenock Rod and Gun Club was led by ALIYA BUTT who shot a 383. The remaining contributing members were ZUZU DEMETRIUS, KRISTINE PETERS, and BRENDAN SEITZ. Maspenock Rod and Gun Club is from Milford, MA, and is coached by Manuel Snyderman.

Both Georgia Competitive Shooters and Maspenock Rod and Gun Club will advance to the Post-Season Tournament that starts next week. Georgia Competitive Shooters is seeded first and will take on eighth seed Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC. Maspenock Rod and Gun Club is seeded second and will take on Queen Anne Marksmanship.

By virtue of finishing in the top four in the Champions Division this season, both Georgia Competitive Shooters and Maspenock Rod and Gun Club will once again be squadded in the Champion's Division in the 2017 season.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Precision Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Division is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is almost identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 40 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 40 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
