South Brunswick AJROTC Narrowly Defeats Stewarts Creek AJROTC
South Brunswick AJROTC edged out Stewarts Creek AJROTC 1021 to 1003 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their sixth win in a row, South Brunswick AJROTC is in second place in their Division with a 6 - 0 record. South Brunswick AJROTC was led by Rayana Edge who shot a 264. The remaining contributing members were Christina Girard, Tommy Nguyen, and Taylor Morgan. South Brunswick AJROTC is from Southport, NC, and is coached by Gary Crowden.
Stewarts Creek AJROTC dropped to 4 - 2 on the season. They are currently in fourth place in their Division. Stewarts Creek AJROTC was led by Christina Johnson who shot a 263. The remaining contributing members were (required) Hatcher, Kyle Garrett, and John Glasner. Stewarts Creek AJROTC is from Smyrna, TN, and is coached by LTC Joel Payne.
Next up South Brunswick AJROTC will compete against Abraham Lincoln AJROTC from Denver, CO. Abraham Lincoln AJROTC currently has a 6 - 0 record. Stewarts Creek AJROTC will compete against North Brunswick AJROTC from Leland, NC. North Brunswick AJROTC currently has a 4 - 2 record.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
