New Caney AJROTC defeats Taylor County AJROTC
New Caney AJROTC defeated Taylor County AJROTC 964 to 878 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their fifth win in a row, New Caney AJROTC is in first place in their Division with a 5 - 0 record. New Caney AJROTC was led by Riley Bernardic who shot a 251. The remaining contributing members were Cohen Jones, Steven Daum, and Sandra Armendariz. New Caney AJROTC is from New Caney, TX, and is coached by MAJ Mike Conner.
Taylor County AJROTC dropped to 2 - 3 on the season. They are currently in sixth place in their Division. Taylor County AJROTC was led by Cody Nabakowski who shot a 239. The remaining contributing members were Joseph Swearingen, Kasey Cruse, and Nita Carter. Taylor County AJROTC is from Monticello, FL, and is coached by Christopher McDaniel.
Next up New Caney AJROTC will compete against Leavenworth AJROTC from Leavenworth, KS. Leavenworth AJROTC currently has a 4 - 1 record. Taylor County AJROTC will compete against Seneca Valley AJROTC from Harmony, PA. Seneca Valley AJROTC currently has a 2 - 3 record.
These two teams are competing in the Army JROTC Governors Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now. Followed by a single-elimination tournament, for the top eight teams who will compete for the league championship.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
