Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC defeats West AJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC defeated West AJROTC 2384.7 to 2262.7 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC was led by Kya Leptrone who shot a 603.8. The remaining contributing members were Courtney Allison, Jens Gigstad, and Thomas Anderson. They are from Fountain, CO, and are coached by Rodney Smith.
Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC is competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in eighth place. Within the Jrotc Conference they are in fourth place. They have a 2 - 3 record.
West AJROTC was led by Celia Gonzalez who shot a 575.2. The remaining contributing members were Coral Espinoza-Torres, Seth Gonzalez, and Ignacio Serrano. West AJROTC is from Denver, CO, and is coached by Jeffrey F Wilson.
West AJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in thirteenth place. Within the Jrotc Conference they are in eighth place. They have a 1 - 3 record.
This coming week Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC has a bye week. While West AJROTC will compete against Piedra Vista AJROTC from Farmington, NM. Piedra Vista AJROTC currently has a 2 - 2 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
