West Valley MCJROTC Narrowly Defeats Patuxent NJROTC
West Valley MCJROTC edged out Patuxent NJROTC 1128.3 to 1111.2 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their third win in a row. West Valley MCJROTC was led by Evelyn Golden who shot a 290.7. The remaining contributing members were Amy Roberts, Ebin Arzac, and Joey Finnikov. They are from Fairbanks, AK, and are coached by SSgt Travis Walker.
West Valley MCJROTC is competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in twelfth place. Within the Marine Corps Jrotc Conference they are in third place. They have a 3 - 1 record.
Snapping a thre game win streak Patuxent NJROTC was led by Madeline Vetting who shot a 283.2. The remaining contributing members were Christopher Mardones, Antara Parekhji, and Gabrielle Price . Patuxent NJROTC is from Lusby, MD, and is coached by 1stSgt Jeffrey Treiber.
Patuxent NJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in fifth place. They have a 3 - 1 record.
Next up West Valley MCJROTC will compete against Jack C. Hays MCJROTC from Buda, TX. Jack C. Hays MCJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record. While Patuxent NJROTC will compete against Zion Benton NJROTC from Zion, IL. Zion Benton NJROTC currently has a 4 - 0 record.
Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.
The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.
The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
