Washburn Rural AFJROTC defeats Northgate AFJROTC Wins Sporter Distinguished Air Force JROTC Conference

Washburn Rural AFJROTC defeated Northgate AFJROTC 2031.7 to 2010.0 last week in the National Air Rifle League. With the win Washburn Rural AFJROTC wins the Sporter Distinguished Air Force JROTC Conference title. They finished the season with an aggregate 6 - 2 record. Washburn Rural AFJROTC was led by Zane Hermann who shot a 546.1. The remaining contributing members were Jaq Donaldson, Thomas Diaz, Nick Fewell, and Mason Padgett. Washburn Rural AFJROTC is from Topeka, KS, and is coached by MSgt Wayne Long.

Northgate AFJROTC finished the season with an aggregate 4 - 4 record and second place in the conference. Northgate AFJROTC was led by, Asa Weil who shot a 520.8. These two teams are competed in the Sporter Distinguished Air Force JROTC Conference title game. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season, followed by this single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in the conference.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shot 20 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
