James River NJROTC Narrowly Defeats La Cueva MCJROTC
Shooting their highest score of the season James River NJROTC edged out La Cueva MCJROTC 1097.9 to 1077.9 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. James River NJROTC finishes the season in twelfth place overall and sixth place within their 'Navy Jrotc' conference. They finished the season with a 4 - 2 record. James River NJROTC was led by, Berend Vandermeer who shot a 282.0. The remaining contributing members were Ethan Williamson, Riley Montgomery, and Wyatt Williamson. James River NJROTC is from Midlothian, VA, and is coached by PSCM(SW) Steve Prince.
Snapping a thre game win streak La Cueva MCJROTC finished the season with a 3 - 3 record. They finishes the season in fifteenth place overall and second place within their 'Marine Corps Jrotc' conference. La Cueva MCJROTC was led by, Carson Back who shot a 276.3. The remaining contributing members were Joshua Fournier, Logan Aldridge, and Abigail Gibson. La Cueva MCJROTC is from Albuquerque, NM, and is coached by 1st Sgt Alberto Griego.
Next up James River NJROTC will compete against South Brunswick AJROTC from Southport, NC. South Brunswick AJROTC currently has a 2 - 4 record. While La Cueva MCJROTC has a bye week.
These two teams are competing in the Champions Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The Champions Divisions is the most difficult division in the league. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, where teams compete for their conference's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all conferences advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.
In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
