Dinwiddie AJROTC Narrowly Defeats American Legion Post 41

Shooting their highest score of the season Dinwiddie AJROTC edged out American Legion Post 41 941 to 922 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Their second win in a row. They finished the season with a 4 - 2 record. Dinwiddie AJROTC was led by, Brian Elsesser who shot a 243. The remaining contributing members were Jalil Copher, Steven Matthews, and Sequoya Joyner. Dinwiddie AJROTC is from Prince George, VA, and is coached by 1SG Darrold Harper.

American Legion Post 41 finished the season with a 1 - 5 record. Shooting their highest team score of the season American Legion Post 41 was led by, Gavin Tharp who shot a 239. The remaining contributing members were Dillon Young, Victoria Smith, and Dylan Blizzard. American Legion Post 41 is from Elk Garden, WV, and is coached by Rod Ryan.

Next up Dinwiddie AJROTC will compete against Northgate AFJROTC from Newnan, GA. Northgate AFJROTC currently has a 2 - 4 record. While American Legion Post 41 will compete against Cookeville American Legion Post 46 from Cookeville, TN. Cookeville American Legion Post 46 currently has a 2 - 2 record.

These two teams are competing in the Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by a single game Conference Title Game for the top two teams in each conference.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
