Special Considerations for BB Gun
Return to the Support Questions page.
Scoring BB Gun targets warrant special considerations from the statistical officer. There are a number of scenarios the statistical officer should be aware of.
BB Guns shoot spherical bullets at low velocities. As a result they do not always make clean shot holes, or the bullet hole will collapse in on itself. When this happens Orion has a difficult time finding the precise location of the shot and will error on the side of caution. Orion will purposefully not score a shot if it can not score it accurately. Instead Orion will leave the shot undetected and flag the target for human intervention.
When Orion does not score a physical shot, the statistical officer should use Orion's "Identify a Shot" feature. With Identify a Shot the statistical officer is giving Orion a "hint" as to the location of the shot. Orion then uses this hint plus the surrounding area on the image to digitally score the shot.
The following should be done for each unscored shot:
- Zoom in on the aiming bull that contains the unscored shot.
- With your mouse, double click near the center of the shot.
The double click activates Orion's identify a shot feature. Orion uses the location of the mouse as the hint, then scores the shot in that area digitally.
Proper BB Gun Maintenance.
Even when a BB Gun is well maintained, the velocity is low enough that not all shot holes can be scored by Orion. In general, though, Orion should be able to score about 99% of shots fired by a well maintained BB Gun. If a particular shooter's BB Gun is not well maintained, the percentage of shots from that BB Gun that Orion can score may be significantly less. In these instances, it is best to repair the rifle.
Internal Cross Fires.
When a shooter fires more than one shot on an aiming bull, but leaves a different aiming bull blank, this is known as an internal cross fire. According to NRA Rule 14.7 the shooter is penalized 1 point for each occurrence.
The following should be done for each internal cross fire:
- Identify and select the highest value shot on the aiming bull.
Select a shot by clicking near the center of the shot. Once selected, the shot turns red.
- Right click and on the pop up menu select "Mark as Internal Cross Fire."
Orion will mark that shot as an internal cross fire and assess a 1 point penalty per rule 14.7.
